What it's for

The 9 a.m. queue orders itself. With the Self-order kiosk you put a tablet on the counter or at the entrance and your guests order and pay on their own, like in fast-food chains:

  • They tap “Tap to order”, choose their language and whether they'll eat in or take away.
  • They see your menu with photos, options and allergens, nice and big, and swipe from one dish to the next.
  • They give their name (if they want) and pay on your card reader, with their phone or at the till with their number.
  • They get their number (“Your number is 23”) and, if you have a till printer, their ticket.
  • The order reaches the kitchen as a pickup order, with its number. When it's ready, the order status screen on your TV shows it under “Ready for pickup”.

You don't need to buy anything: any tablet or touch screen with a browser works (iPad, Android, an inexpensive 10" tablet).

It costs 14.90 € a month per venue (+ VAT), no lock-in, and it's included in Everything. Turn it on in Settings › Modules.

Setting up the kiosk

  1. In the dashboard, go to Settings › Kiosk and tap Add kiosk. Give it a name (Entrance kiosk, Bar kiosk…).
  2. You get a QR and a 6-digit code. On the kiosk tablet, scan the QR with the camera (or open yourvenue.thefoodplease.com/kiosko and type the code).
  3. Done: the tablet is paired and shows “Tap to order”. The QR and the code work once, for 15 minutes.

If you change tablets, tap Pair again: the old one stops working. To remove a kiosk, Remove: it stops taking orders right away.

How your guests pay

In Settings › Kiosk you choose which payment methods you offer:

  • By card on the reader: the amount appears on your Stripe card reader and the guest pays without anyone touching anything. Choose which reader the kiosk uses. If the card is declined, they can try again or pay at the till.
  • With their phone: they scan a QR on the screen and pay on their phone (needs Online payments). The kiosk moves on by itself once it's paid.
  • At the till: the order reaches the kitchen as unpaid. The guest pays at the counter by saying their number; you charge it like any pickup order with Charge and hand over.

If a payment method stops working (card reader offline), the kiosk shows the others. “At the till” is always there. Changing the card reader or phone payments is up to the owner.

What your guest sees

  1. Start: your logo, a dish photo (or your brand colour) and your menu's languages, nice and big.
  2. Eat in or take away?
  3. The menu: categories on one side, dishes as big buttons and the basket always in view. In landscape the basket is on the right; in portrait, at the bottom.
  4. Their name (optional, you can turn it off) and how they pay.
  5. “Your number is 23”, whether it's paid or they pay at the till, and after 20 seconds it goes back to the start.

If someone leaves an order halfway and nobody touches the screen for 60 seconds, “Are you still there?” appears and, with no answer, it goes back to the start with an empty basket.

The order status screen

Open the address shown in Settings › Kiosk (yourvenue.thefoodplease.com/turnos) on a TV or monitor at your venue. It shows two columns, Preparing and Ready for pickup, with the kiosk numbers and also the pickup order codes. Numbers only: no names or amounts. The number that turns “Ready” flashes for a few seconds.

Keeping guests inside the kiosk

There are no links to other websites or to the dashboard on the tablet. Also, pin the tablet to the kiosk screen:

  • iPad (Guided Access): Settings › Accessibility › Guided Access › turn it on and set a passcode. Open the kiosk in Safari and triple-click the side (or Home) button › Start. To leave, triple-click again and type the passcode.
  • Android (Screen pinning): Settings › Security › App pinning (on some phones, “Screen pinning”). Open the kiosk in Chrome, go to Recent apps, tap the Chrome icon › Pin.

To leave kiosk mode, press and hold the logo for 3 seconds and type a manager's PIN or yours (the ones in Settings › Team). From there you can go back to the kiosk, leave or unpair the tablet. While the tablet is a kiosk, if someone opens your menu or the dashboard on it, it goes back to the kiosk.

Common problems

  • “Wrong or expired code”: the code works for 15 minutes and only once. Tap Pair again and use the new one.
  • “Nobody on the team has a manager or owner PIN”: leaving the kiosk needs one. Create it in Settings › Team.
  • “By card” doesn't show: the card reader isn't active, none is chosen or it went offline. Check Settings › Kiosk.
  • “The menu has changed”: a price or a dish changed while ordering. The guest checks the order and sends it again.
  • The kiosk says it's turned off: the module was turned off or expired. Check Settings › Modules.
